About Us

The Division of Graduate and Undergraduate Education (GUE) Staff Council was created as a recommendation from GUE Staff representatives to the MIT Visiting Committee in 2023. The GUE Staff Council was created in January 2024 at the request of then-Vice Chancellor Ian A. Waitz. Vice Chancellor Waitz charged the GUE Staff Council with three goals:

  • Partner with GUE leadership to create a work culture in which all members of the GUE community feel valued, supported, productive, and connected.
  • Advance high-priority, evidence-based, staff-led initiatives.
  • Build on and broaden the work of the GUE Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI) to strengthen community and a sense of connection across GUE.

In early 2024, Interim Vice Chancellor Dan Hastings was appointed following the departure of Ian A. Waitz, who is now MIT’s vice president for research. As the search for the new vice chancellor began, Interim Vice Chancellor Hastings’s vision for the GUE Staff Council included an additional goal: professional development and community support. In February 2025, Vice Chancellor David Darmofal was officially appointed.

Today, the GUE Staff Council consists of 13 members, including two co-chairs, with expertise from around the GUE. We look forward to sharing Vice Chancellor Darmofal’s vision for the GUE Staff Council, and to continuing to move forward with a collaborative vision between staff and GUE leadership.
