Amanda Cornwall

Associate Director, Graduate Student Professional Development
Career Advising & Professional Development

  • My role: I create and deliver programming for graduate students to support their professional development, in collaboration with partners across the Institute.
  • Years at MIT: 5
  • Favorite hobbies or DIY projects: I enjoy travel, writing, houseplants, photography, and writing letters & cards.
  • Last great book you read: A Hungarian novel (in translation) called Temptation, by János Székely.
  • Music or musicians/bands/groups you love: I’m a GenXr, so I love some older stuff like U2. I also love Harry Styles (inexplicably), and Christine and the Queens. My Spotify “liked songs” is rather eclectic.
  • Favorite sports team(s): I support Fulham in the Premier League. It was hard not to love the Scotland team during their World Cup moment.
  • Famous person (living or dead) you’d love to meet, and why: I’d say Greta Thunberg, but I wouldn’t want to take up any of her time!
  • What was your first job? My first “real” job after college was makin’ copies at Kinko’s. Then I got a real real job at Reed College in Portland, OR.
  • Proudest moment in your life: Finishing my PhD.

  • Years at MIT: 14.5
  • Favorite hobbies or DIY projects: Music is a massive special interest of mine; reading; sewing; hiking; baking.
  • Last great book you readDungeon Crawler Carl (I’m almost finished with book 8! Fellow Crawlers, please come yell about this book series with me).
  • Music or musicians/bands/groups you love:  Manic Street Preachers, Blind Guardian, Bruce Springsteen, Sleep Token, Hozier, Billy Idol, Placebo.
  • Best Halloween costume you’ve ever had: Miss Frizzle (and my dog Maisey was the Magic School Bus).
  • Guilty pleasure: Don’t feel guilt about the things you enjoy!
  • If I won the lottery, I would: I wouldn’t say anything, but there would be signs (a big property in the woods with lots of dogs and a library with a rolling ladder).
