Meet Your OVC Colleagues: Summer 2025
Cheryl Mottley

Administrative Assistant II
Office of Academic Community, Empowerment and Success (formerly OME)
- My role: I support the operations team within the office.
- Years at MIT: Too many to count.
- Favorite hobbies or DIY projects: Some of the things I enjoy are good food, friends and fun (with music and dancing), being outdoors walking through bird sanctuaries, writing poetry, and watching “Secrets of Nature.”
- Best Halloween costume you’ve ever had: Dressed as high society celebrity in the “Roaring 20s.”
- Favorite sports team: Arsenal (British football team).
- Proudest moments in your life: Becoming a mother/grandmother.
- Favorite dessert or treats: Coconut turnovers (sinful).
- Most influential person in your life: My grandmother, the drill sergeant, who taught me my first poem which I can recite even to this day: “I have a dog his name is Spot.” She was the most gifted/well-rounded person I know. She was a fantastic cook, baker, marathon walker (through the eyes of an 8-yr old), seamstress/crochet artist extraordinaire and she made the best rum punch evah!
- Guilty pleasure: Watching murder mysteries on Brit Box.
Brian Tavares

Director of Finance and Administration, OVC HQ
- My role: I oversee all finances and financial activity in the OVC, oversee Desktop Support, and manage space projects, renovations, and space inventory.
- Years at MIT: 37!
- Favorite hobbies or DIY projects: Favorite hobbies or DIY projects: I love languages and worked hard for many years to become fluent in French. I also can get by in Portuguese and spent some time during Covid studying Irish Gaelic.
- Famous person (living or dead) you’d love to meet, and why: Abe Lincoln or Rosa Parks, probably for, hopefully, obvious reasons.
- Favorite movie: The Others and Fargo
- Most influential person in your life: Honestly, I’ve learned so much from working with MIT faculty. I couldn’t name just one. Pay attention to how they think and work and there’s always something to learn. I think their respect and appreciation of staff is something not always found elsewhere and that’s a gift.
- Favorite dessert or treats: Anything with chocolate and peanut butter. I’m not fussy!
- Dream vacation spot: Scotland or anywhere I can find a castle or ancient monastery and learn about the history.

- Years at MIT: Less than 1
- Favorite hobbies or DIY projects: I recently learned to propagate my monstera plant, so currently caring for the babies.
- Music or musicians/bands/groups you love: I’m a big pop girl; Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Dean, and old Taylor Swift are some of my favorites. Noah Kahan and Zach Bryan are my less poppy picks.
- Dream vacation spot: Island hopping in Greece.
- Guilty pleasure: Vanderpump Rules (or really any trash reality show).
- On the weekends, I love to: Spend time with my friends, thrift shop, buy overpriced coffee, read in the park, and track down new oyster happy hour spots.
Lauren Rodriguez

Sr. Assistant Director, Outreach
Admissions Office
- My role: I am an undergraduate admissions counselor, current co-chair for the OVC Staff Council, and am the lead coordinator for Campus Preview Weekend (MIT’s admitted students weekend!).
- Years at MIT: 5
- Favorite hobbies or DIY projects: I am always walking, either around campus, Boston, or on my walking pad (during the Admissions reading season).
- Favorite food or cuisine: I am truly a quintessential millennial. The best meal, hands down, is a diet coke, a Caesar salad, and french fries on a hot summer day. Outside of my comfort meal, you can always find me with a coffee in hand.
- On the weekends, I love to: Go to group exercise classes (Handlebar & Solidcore are my favorites!), grab coffee with friends, and make a homecooked meal.
- Favorite dessert or treats: Almond croissants or ice cream (coffee oreo being my favorite).
- If I won the lottery, I would: Spend it all traveling the world with my family.
